Choosing the right platform is one of the decisions with the biggest impact on an online shop's growth. It isn't just a technical question: the platform determines how quickly you can launch, how much it costs to keep the operation running and how far you can scale.

Shopify: speed to launch and premium support

Shopify is the most solid option if you want a professional shop without losing weeks to infrastructure. Hosting, certificates, payment gateways and a CDN are all included. It's ideal for brands that want to focus on product and marketing, not on maintaining servers.

Its app ecosystem covers practically everything: reviews, subscriptions, multilingual, loyalty, logistics. The flip side: every app is a recurring monthly cost, so it's worth auditing your stack at least once a year.

WooCommerce: full control on WordPress

WooCommerce is the right choice when you already have a WordPress site, need very specific business rules, or want to avoid transaction fees. In return, you take on hosting, updates and security — all of which require real maintenance.

It works very well for complex catalogues, strong editorial content and cases where the website matters as much as the shop. If you sell 10 carefully curated products, it's also a lightweight, inexpensive option.

Which one should you choose?

If you sell direct to consumers, want to launch quickly and grow without wrestling with infrastructure, Shopify is almost always the answer. If your model needs bespoke logic, deep integrations with an ERP or a very powerful CMS, WooCommerce gives you the control that Shopify can't offer.

Either way, the platform is only the starting point. What really drives results is the design of the experience, the speed of the site and how well you handle conversion day to day.
